It was originally used by the Irish Civil Army during the 1916 uprising and was flown alongside the Irish tricolor and the flag of the Irish Republic. The imagery of the weapon, as well as the use of stars, is consistent with other notable Marxist states, but the Catholic connotations also give the flag a distinctly Irish significance that resonated with many ICA members who, quite recently, in 1912, had endured a severe lockout in Dublin that led to a peak in hostility toward wealthy business owners.
